Re: Britain sends strong message

It was a dangerous thing to do but the sentence seems excessive to me.

Perhaps he should have beaten a pensioner to a pulp instead, might have been free earlier.

Re: Britain sends strong message

I think he deserved the six month sentence (he will be out in three months anyway). It was a pre-meditated, dangerous act and according to the article he showed no remorse. He said that something about severe budget cuts in England pushing him over the edge, which seems to me to be a bit of an odd thing to say to rationalise his actions. He himself was a rower and it also sounds to me like he was a bit jealous of other rowers. Maybe the 6 months (3 months with good behaviour) will be just the time he needs to cool his heels and clear his head.

6 months seems harsh to me. It was a sporting event and he only held up the event for 20mins. A public nuisance maybe, but to say Oldfield had acted dangerously, disproportionately and had not shown what he was actually protesting against - maybe he should have had a banner!

Harsh indeed. If he had mugged a pensioner, he would probably have got off with a few hours community service.

Re: Britain sends strong message

The fact that his sentence was so over the top extreme, leaves it open for him to appeal his sentence and very likely have it overturned.

Re: Britain sends strong message

OK the man is a prat, but the sentence was way overboard. Muggers and burglars get a slap on the wrist, so where is the consistency? A public flogging would have been quite adequate...
