WIN 8 Out of Time!

I was reminded today that since January 2016 Micro$oft no longer support Windows 8.

If you have Windows 8 then you need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (support until 2023) but personally Windows 8 as a whole is such a dog I think you might as well upgrade straight to Windows 10.

Unfortunately you cannot do this directly from WIN8 except by downloading the ISO file from M$ creating a DVD and upgrading that way. If that is too hard then I am afraid you are stuck with upgrading to 8.1 then 10.

For the ISO file:

BTW you will also need to know if you are running the 32 bit or 64 bit version. Control Panel > System and look for System Type. It is possible to change to 64 bit BUT it is complex because your existing drivers won't work.

Re: WIN 8 Out of Time!

Hi Bruce, funnily enough I was just reading my fortnightly (delivered) computer magazine, albeit an edition a month old and this is what I read...

IE...any version below IE11 won't be supported from January 2016.

As for the OS, these are the cut off dates.

Vista...support ends 11 April 2017
7...extended support ends 14 January 2020
8...mainstream support ends 9 January 2018, extended support ends 10 January 2023
10...mainstream support ends 13 October 2020, extended support ends 14 October 2025

So in actual fact it's the browser that is exposed to hackers, not the OS.

No, that is not correct WIN8 OS support has ceased only WIN8.1 is supported until 2013. There is a big difference.

Read the link, thanks, but it doesn't make sense if support is still in place for W7, and Vista!

Re: WIN 8 Out of Time!

Windows 8 was particularly crap though. I doubt many people still use it. I was offered windows 8 on my new PC a year ago and I insisted they put Windows 7 64bit on it instead.

I have the offer of a free upgrade to Windows 10 but I'm not taking them up on it. I prefer other people to find all the bugs first! Maybe in a year or so, when all the kinks have been ironed out.
