Mobile updates

I have a mobile phone an HTC Desire X and it keeps asking me to update it and Ive not bothered in almost a year or more now doing this.
Im putting off updating as im not sure what will happen (my fone might explode) or if it will change everything on the fone so I cant use some things in the same way.
Also how long will it take to complete the updates if ive left it this long?
I hope some bright spark can help answer my queries in an easy to understand way thanks boffins!!!

Just a warning, when you press the update button a recording comes on with the following message...

Good morning, Mr. Phelps, your mission if you decide to accept it... as always if any of you team is killed or captured the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your participation. This recording will self destruct in five seconds..

Shouldn't take long, but you may have to reset your phone afterwards, simply turn it off for 30 seconds then turn it back on again.

Will it change any of my settings on the fone or how msging or gallery works? Ive heard of people updating their fones and then not being able to use some of their previously usable functions.

Would not think so, most updates are for security reasons, must admit I'm not familiar with your particular phone, but I have never had any problems.
