Re: Bye Bye Roger, Off You Go Back Via Great Western!

Oh, I see what this thread is all about now.

How about this one: Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.

Or this one: My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets.

I actually found it easier to just remember the colours as there weren't that many of them.

I never could remember resistor colour codes.

Then there were cable colour codes. I stood no chance with them, that's why I wrote them down in a note book. The multicore twenty-five way cables we used had twelve pairs for signals plus a screen. The colour code went something like, Red Black, Red Green, Red White, Red Yellow, then changed to something like, Black Green, Black Yellow etcetera.

When we had to use eighty way cables, I don't think there was a one of us could remember them.

There was something we learned at school, in German class I think, that was Ev'n Mad Tramps, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was for now.

Acronyms and sayings to remember other things, I think.

Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain is supposed to help you remember the colours of the rainbow, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

I have no idea what the first post is about though.

Which sounds like something wire-like, perhaps? or cables? Reason I say that is because there is a telephone exchange box at the end of my street (which is always open, weirdly) and it has a lot of different coloured wires.

In the old lead telephone cables the wires were paper insulated and twisted in pairs indicated by a number of coloured bars on the paper combined with the layer in which they were wound. They had to be very carefully laid out and went in opposite directions depending on which end of the cable you were at.

Plastic coated telephone wires in my day were always based on:

Blue Orange Green Brown Slate

Each twisted with a white wire

If you needed more than 5 pairs

Then they added another colour as a stripe like Blue White, Orange White, Green White etc

I forget what happened after that, after all it was 50 years ago.

These days the resister code bands on quarter watt resisters are too small for me to read without a magnifying glass so I usually just check them with a multimeter
