Re: Norweigen Fjords possible help wanted

A bit like going to any mediterranean beach then in your eyes, seen one beach you have seen the lot Not quite so with Norway, every bend in the road brings a different view. I agree some of the stops are only at small places without anything special,Shacks as you call them may well be someones house. The stops are so that you can go to see a tourist attraction, and that stop may be the closest point at which the ship can get to, and also it may also be part of the attraction of arriving at a small place without 100s of tatty gift shops. Some of the Towns visited are well worth a walk around on your own, Alesund , Haugasund, They are all different in some respect to towns in the U K. Also worth remembering that the Population of Norway as a whole is only just over 5000,000.
Flam Railway must be many years since you went on that, Wooden seats no . what you forget to realise is that they have tried to keep the style of the old trains, the seats may not be plush virgin rail, but certainly not wooden, oh dear no air conditioning, tragic. The engines are modern. The line is one of the most beautiful in the world, of course there are hundreds of waterfalls, how do you think the water gets off the mountains.
Expensive , yes to the tourist, Norway is a RICH country, has high wages, so consequently high prices. Tourist centers are no different to anywhere else in the world, they are expensive, dont forget that they have to make their entire earnings in a very short season maybe May -August.
Use the ordinary shops or a petrol station if you want to eat something.
Bergen is a beautiful city, but lot more too it than the harbour. Dont take a bus , walk its only 10 mins.
One of the highlights is the Fløibanen railway to the top of the mountain, a must if you go to Bergen.

Really if you like the Mediterranean you will not enjoy Norway that much

Re: Norweigen Fjords possible help wanted

We're toying with the idea of a short fjords trip sometime, but not a cruise. Fly and then...

This thread is proving invaluable with some very worthwhile views and info.

well we have now paid for the cruise and our eldest son decided to do the trip as well, so he has booked a cabin and paid.

Just got to wait for the excursions to be announced, Flam railway being top of the list
