When, l worked with three other women in an office, one of them referred to the rest of us as ‘the girls’.It didn’t bother me but one of our other colleagues (an ex teacher) hated it and asked her to stop referring to us as the ‘girls’!

I have a question being one of the few from Canada on here.Once I made a post and mentioned going out for a walk with my "girlfriend" and someone remarked that I was a lesbian as "girlfriend" is the term lesbians use to define themselves.
I am a straight female and was puzzled and asked for clarification as over here we refer to our female friends as "girlfriends"
Was I being put on? Have to be careful with translations.
