I take your point, but I maintain that pulling up the loop would move both of the ball bearings inwards in the same way as would inserting a thin strip of metal down each of the holes, because the angled edges of the cutouts would act in the same way.
I still think, though, that inserting metal strips would not move the ball bearings sufficiently far, as the barrel would prevent their moving.
You'll probably prove me wrong by posting a YouTube video of someone doing it!
