The World At War

Because I'm only a whippersnapper (in comparison to some of you more mature gents and ladies), I didn't see this landmark series when it was first aired in 1973. I've seen the odd episode on the Yesterday channel, but that's about it.

I recently bought the full DVD box set (12 discs;48 episodes) and I'm wading my way through it, usually watching a couple of programmes at a time. What an education this series is about WWII. It's got to be the most famous and most highly regarded series of all time. Plus, it's all fact.

Anyone else seen this excellent series?

Never seen it I have a feeling it would depress me so won't be tempted, but we are living the real thing I think at the moment.

I've seen bits and pieces over the years, but I also am too young to remember its original broadcasting.

It's regarded as a fine series.

It's not so much depressing, Julie, as a historical account of actual life from the period. It can be harrowing, but also uplifting in parts when the allies broke through certain territories, and the interviews with servicemen, political figures and civilians from later on are excellent.
Everybody should have some basic knowledge of this war.

A damn good series .... and a long one but if you're going to watch just one about the war that is the one to watch.

I love the music too.

I do remember my dad watching some of it when I growing up, but I was only nine then so I wasn't interested.

Incidentally, before I began watching this series I watched World War I In Colour, which is just as remarkable when you consider the resources they had a hundred years ago and had to make do with either what they had, or build or invent something virtually on the spot.

Re: The World At War

We are fascinated by David Jason's series anyone else watching that. Some amazingly courageous people back in the First World War we thought, ended up wondering if people these days could be that brave and came up with probably not. Isn't that sad.

Re: The World At War

I saw the original series and I also lived through WW2. I also think that this was an accurate narrative told in a convincing manner.
