It's amazing what we will do for a good photograph. I have also stood a few feet away from a gator knowing that it could leap out of the water at any moment.

My Grandson pretending he was Crocodile Dundee in Gatorland, Florida, a few years ago. The alligator's mouth was taped for safety reasons
