Re: Over 50s Club Yorkshire

It's the first time I have stuck my head in this section (Hope I'm allowed in, me being a Southerner). I noticed it was Yorkshire night on TV last night and enjoyed the programme about York castle. York and Whitby are two of my favourite places and I notice you are all posting pics so here's one of the beach at Whitby.

Good question!

Actually, I think it is more purple than pink! Perhaps someone planted some lilac or bluebells or something (I'm afraid I know nothing about flowers).

I remember, I think it was in 1968, that the old tubular mast fell down! They put up a temporary replacement very quickly (though I think I missed a few episodes of Coronation Street at the time), then this concrete structure was built. It is unique in the country. I remember there was some talk at the time of allowing visits to the viewing area near the top but. of course, health and safety scotched that.

Aye, I remember that too. YTV had just started broadcasting so they disappeared while the new temporary mast was installed. We had to go back to watching Granada TV.

A gang of us went up to Emley Moor looking for souvenirs of the damaged mast in some of the surrounding fields. An electric shock from a cattle fence soon stopped us doing that.

Whitby one of my all time favourite places - my leg muscles remember those steps very well!

St Mary's Abbey - lovely place but why is the grass pink ?
Praise be, it's another miracle!

A close-up picture of the new phased array ballistic missile tracking radar at Fylingdales, one of only three in the world.

Also, a rare picture of both the new antenna and the famous three 'golf balls' which preceded it. The 'golf balls' of course, have since been dismantled, but were for a long time a well-known feature of the North York Moors national park.

I wonder if they still have golf balls at Menwith. Was marched out of there by armed guards once - so am not about to go and look!
