Onions.

I planted some onions nice and early this year and they took off really nicely. That was until we had all this heavy rain and over a couple of days the stalks started to curl over. I've since read that the cause of this is from too much water. I was wondering if any one else is having the same problem and knows of a remedy. I thought of digging a channel on either side of the rows but it will definitely get drier in the summer, so that might not be so good.

Re: Onions.

Hi Pauline and Muddy,
No, no solution yet and they're not looking any better and to top it off it's raining quite heavily at the moment. We grow tomatoes under a roof and they're booming. The bush beans, carrots and potatoes are loving the wet too but everything else seems to have the brakes on. Maybe I expect too much and I'm just too impatient.

I'm sorry to hear your plants are flattened Muddy and yours are suffering Pauline. Hopefully they'll recover.

Re: Onions.

Hi Rehab,
Nothing is really happening apart from the leaves curling up. I noticed yesterday some of the smaller leaves are starting to turn yellow.

Can you lift one in order to look at the roots?

I think I might have found the problem. There's no flower head forming and I pulled one of the onions and the roots look nice and healthy. The other day Mrs K. weeded the onions and carrots. In quite a few places she left soil mounded around the onion stalks and on those onions the stalks curled. Where I can see a little of the top of the onions, they are OK. I'll pull the soil back this morning and I'll wait and see what happens. I'll let you know.
