^^^This.
My family and I tell each every time we part company - my son will often just walk up to me, put his arms around me and say 'love you mum' for real reason - I think that is lovely. My last 'boyfriend' would ring at all odd times to say he was thinking of me and just wanted to tell me that he loved me. I thought that was nice too,.
I don't understand why people feel it shouldn't be said - when it's your birthday, people say happy birthday but you know it's what they would wish for you anyway - it's just nice that people care enough to tell you.
Still, we are all different and as long as we end up with like-minded people, it isn't really a big problem is it.
