We have many people from foreign countries in the UK who have applied for and been given British citizenship.

I understand that but then they are not Polish or whatever but are British.

A good friend of ours' father was Polish (he is now dead). He escaped the EU police... er, sorry, my mistake...

he escaped the Nazis in Poland during the war and made his way to France and fought with the resistance against the EU... oh, damn, there I do again... my apologies...

against the Nazis. At the end of the war he came to Britain and applied for British citizenship. He still regarded himself as being Polish.

Many other foreign people have done this.
It is not difficult, apparently, especially these days.

When we escape the EU, and you realise the futility of remaining in that dictatorship, you could possibly do the same!

What a sad, sorry, state of affairs all this is.
I think you have hit the nail on the head with this post.

Watching from outside for nearly 50 years the damage to Britain since the war is largely self inflicted by inept leadership - this is not a purely British phenomenon but other countries have had the benefit of the odd competent leader in among the seat warmers that has pulled them out of the shit at just the right time.

Sadly Britain has lacked such leadership and still looks no closer to getting it. Because of this I fear that whether Britain stayed in the EU or leaves decline is inevitable and that after leaving the EU the pain won't be short but will continue. The danger is that under the present regime the only course for Britain is as a low cost, low wage economy. That will be painful for all its inhabitants and very sad.

I'm afraid you are perfectly correct here.
In my opinion, we haven't had a first rate PM since Thatcher, although I'm sure there are those who would disagree with me.
(Of course, I have no need to name names!)

They came here and settled now have become British citizens, I should have said polish British or Sri Lankan british, or German British I suppose. But that isn't used much in the real world really is it. Well not rpund here anyway.

Second generation are British with Sri Lankan heritage again not often used they tend to just say British. Third generation are black British that's used a lot more in real life than just British I think.

Bruce this is something many here don't seem to want to accept. The changes needed post-Brexit will force us to be a more competitive wage economy. So spending power of the poorest in society will not increase. Benefits will not increase, they will fall or disappear. Choice in shops will go down or goods will become more expensive. Things we take for granted could become luxuries.

It's not going to suddenly make our government any more efficient than its been all these years. If it leads to a socialist government that will bankrupt the country at such a time leaving an even bigger mess to sort out later.

The only thing I can hope for is a gradual transition with some sensible safeguards negotiated to stop us free-falling. But given our government cannot agree on anything what's the chances that will be the case?

All this at the time when we have the spectre of automation haunting us. The jobs market is predicted to greatly contract for many manual and factory jobs. We will end up even more reliant on international investment and ownership than we already are. Having to agree to terms we find unpalatable right now.
