Re: Smokers lungs

My parents didn't smoke but my big brother did. Although he didn't influence me as he didn't smoke in the house much. My cousin gave up when my uncle died of lung cancer. He was a chain smoker and in his late fifties.

It was the pub culture in those days that got people hooked. Since they banned smoking in pubs lots of people have given up and lots of pubs have closed. You didn't really think about the damage you were doing to your body.

When I added it up I only smoked for about 8 years because I was always giving up for months or a year only to relapse at a party when someone offered me a cigarette.

The worst thing of course was passive smoking. I was so pleased when they banned smoking in public places.

Re: Smokers lungs

My dad lived to the age of 79 and smoked all of his life.

Worse, he smoked Capstan Full Strength as he maintained that they were the only cigarettes he could taste.

Worse still, being a tight-fisted Yorkie, he kept the dog ends in a large sweet jar. He then broke them open and used them to make his own roll-ups.

Even worse still, those dog ends went into the jar for 're-processing' too!

Re: Smokers lungs

I also saw a video of damaged lungs at school in the 50s which put me off smoking ,never wanted to try it,and my son saw one at school in the 70/80s,he said it put him off smoking and he would never smoke, but during his teens he did take it up sadly and smoked for several years up to his 30s when he did give up

Yes, I'm certain they must have been like old boots towards the end: COPD, emphysema and other things too, no doubt.

He never had cancer, though.

I've known 2 people, including my dad, who quit smoking and years later died of lung cancer anyway.

They say "it's never too late to quit."

I say it is. With my dad, in particular, he quit smoking. But the damage was already done and he died of lung cancer at the age of 59.
