Crickhowell moves offshore - The Town That Took on the Taxman

Hi

You really have to admire them.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a6728971.html

It should be fun to see how far they get.

I hope they make their point and something happens, if not, maybe Prees will be the next.

Update: You can watch it online here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...-on-the-taxman

If they get this government to pull their finger out to make sure everyone pays their due taxes so much the better.

What a great idea. If they get enough publicity I'm sure other towns will follow.

Good for them
Crickhowell is a lovely little town. The trade there must be very seasonal making it difficult for some small businesses to survive in the winter.
I hope they prove their point.

It sounds an amusing stunt to attract attention and trade to the town rather like Hay on Wye trying to declare independence a few decades ago?

Not seen it yet, but looks pretty good

For some of the UK's biggest companies, paying corporation tax seems to be optional. Using devilishly complicated - but completely legal - accounting techniques, they can run rings around HMRC. Now, the small businesses of one Welsh town are fighting back. The local traders of Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons are embarking on a mission to copy the techniques used by their multinational rivals, and to set up a DIY tax avoidance scheme of their very own.

Presented by Heydon Prowse, co-presenter of BBC Three's The Revolution Will Be Televised, this film follows the owner of the local coffee shop, clothing stores, smokery, optician and bookshop of on their offshore mission. It is a journey that will take them to secretive tax havens, smart tax lawyers and even force a showdown with the taxman himself. Can they crack the secrets of the big tax avoiders and level the playing field for the small guy?

Watching the programme now.

Usual culprits Amazon, Facebook, Café Nero, Subway, Starbucks etc etc.

They move their money to the Isle of Man, Holland, Ireland, Luxemburg and The Cayman Islands.

The company headquarters for each company is a mail drop only but qualifies for enormous tax exemptions.

One building had two occupants but 15,000 companies were registered there!
All legal of course.

What I hadn't picked up on previously was that with the billions of pounds saved they can afford to undercut the prices of their competitors and eventually kill them off.

It just brings home how corrupt our governments are.
They are more than complicit in this outrage.

Instead of austerity cuts go for the tax dodgers and all our lives would be that much more comfortable.
