Re: How to make a disk image backup in Windows 8

For updating many of my folders and files across multiple PCs, I use OneDrive, but for my music collection I use Microsoft SyncToy, an old but efficient and trustworthy file synchronisation utility, which can be run on an adhoc basis or as a scheduled job - only local networking is required, no cable or internet connection.

Thousands of files can be compared and updated in minutes. AFAIK, there is no upper limit on the amount of data to be compared and copied - my music collection is some 200 GB in size.

I thought there was a limit on OneDrive, at least the free version.

Anyway, I'm still interested in finding out whether there is such a thing as a USB cable with which you can link two computers to transfer files.

Stop the press. I did a search and it seems that there are such cables:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/conne...usb-usb-cable/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Wind.../dp/B002L5S6VW

Obviously, they look quite different and appear to have some gubbins along the line to permit data transfer.
I'll have to research this further, but I think it looks like you also need some special software to make them work.

Why bother with cables and special software when you can transfer across your local wifi network with SyncToy .....

All ways mentioned can be used to transfer files from one computer to another. However, it looks like JBR has found a cable that will enable the transfer of files to be done in a way that he wants to do it. I reckon that's OK too.

I'd personally do it using a USB thumb drive or a USB hard drive. This has the advantage of being able to keep the files on the drive once the transfer of files is done. It becomes yet another back-up, which can't be bad I suppose.
