Portable bluetooth speakers

I've not really looked into these things before, but read that are getting better and better.

So, I decided to listen to some in a hi-fi shop and was actually stunned.
I'm a bit of an audiophile, still having my full separates system in the living room, hence the fact that I've always ignored these in thinking that they would not sound good.

After listening to several, I could not make my mind up between the Sony SRS X-55's or the Creative Roar 2.
In the end, I just ordered both..
The idea being, one for the kitchen / garden and one to leave upstairs.

I'm still actually amazed at the sound that comes out of these. Our living room for example is I suppose an average size, but either of these can fill the room with sound easily. The bass is particularly stunning for the size of the units, as is the overall sound definition / clarity / detail.

I'd find it hard to decide between these two. I suppose I'd give the edge on sound to the Creative as the sound seems that "tiny" bit more spacial. Overall I'd choose the Sony, as I prefer the aesthetics and user interface. Most controls are touch, whereas on the Creative they are physical buttons with a slight click. You can't separate either on build quality, they are both solid and flawless.
Both will go for circa 8-10 hours on the internal battery depending on volume levels.

Anyway, enough rambling. Just thought I'd give a heads up that these things are simply awesome these days!
They'll never replace a full blown hi-fi, but in a small or medium room they come damn close.

Re: Portable bluetooth speakers

A friend of mine bought one recently
A Jam speaker.
I listened to it in my fairly big living room and it was really good.
Even with the volume right up the sound didn't distort at all.
It cost him £20!
I'm getting one

I don't even know what they are for? Radio2 have been giving them away as consolation prizes if you don't get the 3 in 1 songs, in Ken Bruce's pop quiz, but I am none the wiser?

Tiff,

They are basically an external remote speaker for anything that has bluetooth (most mobiles for example)

Say you have music on your phone, you pair the phone with the speakers and play the music from the speaker instead of it coming out the phone.

Ah! Thank you, no good to me then. I only use my phone for calls or texting.

Re: Portable bluetooth speakers

My wife and I have purchased a Sonos, and it's only about 16cm high and 12 cm sort of square, it's portable but mains power and you can move it from room to room.
The quality of sound is exceptional and you can add other units as you can afford. It's wireless and you can play your PC /iPhone music through it.
I would highly recommend this product.
