Re: British search engine?

I just tried a Startpage search for 'lighting' (a randomly chosen item). Even without 'UK' added, the first 50 results were all UK sites. I didn't look at the all of the .com sites but those that I did were UK too.

The question was about a search engine that gave UK results, so Startpage might be the answer. It doesn't quite fit in with the 'U.S taking over the World' but I suppose that's a good thing?

That sounds encouraging.

An alternative tactic could be to specify something like *.co.uk but I don't know whether that would work. It doesn't seem to on Google, anyway!

Re: British search engine?

Using Google to search the Internet is so much the norm that people use the word 'google' to describe a search of the Internet. As in: "I googled it" rather than "I searched the Internet for it". Such is the success of Google ..and it is very a good search engine.

Need to be a bit careful if wanting to use other search engines as some can get onto the computer and be difficult to change or remove. At least with Google, we know what we get and what we give them in return. They give us search results and we give them data so they can supply us with adverts. Perhaps a fair give and take system.

As regards alternative search engines, I often think 'How-To Geek' gives good advice in the field of computers and the Internet and they have some about search engines. I haven't heard of 'Blekko' (mentioned in the article linked to below) but know that lots of people use the others without complaint.

I don't worry about the privacy of my searches. It's just that I prefer the page presentation and relevance to search terms that Startpage gives. It uses Google's results but seems to list them differently (more relevance to UK?).

Ah yes, I remember the * or the wildcard I think it was called but you are right, it doesn't seem to work any more.

I'd like to nominate this for the "Naivest Post Of The Year" award.

To be fair, I have never seen any adverts when using Google. I do use AdBlock, I suppose. That might explain it!

Quite right Realist. A simplistic analysis but just trying to keep a rather deep subject to basics. Posts get long enough as they are. I do know what's going on.

Can't those few words of mine you have quoted be taken in the context of all the other posts I make in this particular forum before making a nomination like that?

It works.

Re: British search engine?

I've just been exploring Google's 'Advance Search' facility for 'plants', and entered in:

Find pages with... none of these words: $

Region: United Kingdom

and, lo and behold, I looked through the first half-dozen pages without seeing a single American web site! A bit of a faff to do every time, though.

So I may have found the answer, although I'd have to search for something else before counting my chickens.
