There would be an outcry if you used them now but they were safe if you kept an eye on them.

On Christmas eve he took his axe and went across the fields in search of a holly tree complete with berries.
The newly felled holly tree was placed in a tub like any fir Christmas tree, the tub was covered in green crepe paper and a red bow, the tree was decorated with baubles and tinsel then lastly came little silver holders and red candles.
What a picture it made
the lighted candles were reflected in the shiny leaves and berries .
Because fresh holly doesn't burn very well there was little chance of the leaves catching fire, they never did .
I don't know why we had holly, I can only assume out in the countryside poor people made use of what came to hand rather than buying something .
