I put some new batteries in tonight as a last resort - RESULT.
Fancy that, that is what it must have been, but what I don't understand is why did the handset face showed the batteries were almost fully charged?
JBR could be right. I've had batteries in a handset that are OK but not contacting all that well, so causing the phone to stop working. Had the same with television remote control batteries too.
It could be decided by putting the original batteries back to see if they work or not. Might save throwing away some good rechargeable batteries.
