They are "miserable penny pinching bullies" but at least they are OUR "miserable penny pinching bullies" that we foolishly voted into power and, more importantly, they are "miserable penny pinching bullies" that we can get rid of by the democratic process.
From the 15th Century, Catalonia was an independent principality within the Crown of Aragon - ruling its own territory and making its own laws. When the Bourbons took the crown and began the establishment of the Spanish State, Catalonia was eventually subsumed into the Spanish State under the constitution of 1812. From the 1850s, a movement of Catalan renaissance (the Renaixença ) together with demands for independence from Spain began to grow. Since then, calls for Catalan independence have continued to grow but, unlike the UK response to Scottish Independence demands, the Spanish response to the Catalans has been bullying and (and EU approved) state-sponsored violence as we saw last weekend.

Listening to radio yesterday it appears many remainers are turning away and now want to leave. The eu have insulted, belittled, ignored etc far too long for many people to accept them as their masters.

The problems in Spain are deep seated and Spain and the Eu have now crossed a point that means everyone can see what they really are IMO.

Will the Basques be next??? - their 'political wing' (Hari Batayun) seem to have gone awfully quiet of late.

Re: The Truth Brussels Cannot Bear To Hear!

Good thread ShropshireGirl. We have all been living in a police state for some time, even in the UK. It's just that you don't realise it is there whilever people are sat in their armchairs, dumbed down and not challenging their rulers. Should the people of the UK rebel, you would then see that we are in a police state, just as the USA is imo. This may actually happen if/when BrExit fails to happen. The EU stooge politicians will kick the can down the road until they feel the time is ready to offer people a second referendum. When people see BrExit totally fudged such that we haven't really left the EU at all, then there may very well be a revolution and millions of people taking to the streets.

Meanwhile, Viva Catalonia and Viva Espana! I love the Spanish and am pleased to see them make a stand. The EU has done its level best to prevent and obstruct a democratic referendum. They have tried to block it on the basis that it is against EU rules.

I have pointed out numerous times that the Lisbon Treaty, to which our fraudulent politicians have signed us up, states very clearly that we MAY NOT OPPOSE THE EU AND MUST SUPPORT ITS GOALS AND AIMS.

This is simply polite speak for a totalitarian regime where freedom of speech and freedom of action are ultimately lost.

We absolutely must get out of the EU asap.

Re: The Truth Brussels Cannot Bear To Hear!

These events in Catalonia have probably done us a big favour in a round about way, in that they have demonstrated to the world the way that the EU is controlling all of its member countries.

Perhaps more importantly, Spain's high handed attitude toward its people, supported of course by the EU mandarins, has been witnessed by all of the other EU countries and their people. Surely, they must understand that they too are subject to the will of the EU in the same way and that the penny must now be dropping that, should they in the future wish for their own independence, it is likely that they will be treated in a similar way. Not a very nice prospect!

Hopefully the EU, by overtly supporting the police action in Catalonia, will have resulted in them shooting themselves in the foot.

(My bold)

Where exactly in the Lisbon Treaty does it say that?

In what way did the EU try to prevent and obstruct the Catalonia referendum? What rules did they say it was against?

It didn't.

But it didn't condemn the Spanish government's reaction, or even mention it as far as I know.

As long as member states toe the EU line, I think Brussels is perfectly happy.

The EU ignore the Catalonia problem at their peril, they could have offered a mediating role. Among other thing it has the potential to have an adverse effect on the Euro.
So much for the EU 'keeping the peace'.
