Re: Using a smartphone as Sat Nav

Hi

I use mine as a sat nav.

It does not use any data unless you have the traffic alerts on and even then it is minimal.

You download the maps using your wifi at home and then it works offline just using the GPS on the phone.

There are different ones you can get which work this way,I use CoPilot, which covers the whole of Europe.

Presumably you would need a reasonable sized storage card for the maps.

Re: Using a smartphone as Sat Nav

I use Google Maps. Not only is it free, but it's updated regularly in contrast to some Sat-Navs which only update every two years if you're lucky. Not only that, it shows you a photo of your destination via Street View when you arrive so you can check it's the right place.

You can also select any part of the UK and download that onto the phone so you can use it a standard map.

Hi

Not that bad, the whole of Europe is 4gb and you can download direct to an SD card on your phone.

Hi

Not Co Pilot Tpin, once the maps are downloaded to your phone, which you do by connecting to your home wifi so as to not use any data allowance, the app does not use any data allowance when in use, it works using the GPS in your phone.

The only data it uses is if you switch the Traffic Alerts on and even that is minimal.

Hi

Voice direction does not use data on Co Pilot.

Re: Using a smartphone as Sat Nav

I use google maps on my phone as sat nav when required

Never been charged over my contract of 5gb

Mostly I know how to get from one city to the other, it's when I'm in the city I turn it on after finding a safe place to pull over or park
