Actually I don't think it would bother me to declare I'm straight.
It's best they know these things. I expect it's to avoid any embarrassment for the patient.

I dont mind saying my sexuality, but I cant work out the point of declaring it to be in hospital? If its a data collecting exercise or something more

Considering most of these initial questions are asked in open waiting/reception areas it is a breach of confidentiality !

Off topic - but related:-
I was in the Bank a few days ago to discuss setting up a new account and was expected to sit and do this in an open atrium - I left!

Have these people never heard the word 'Private' ?

One would hope so, Carol, but quite often the Receptionist asks the questions and fills in the forms.

Would everyone be truthful about their sexuality. Say, if someone hadn’t ‘come out’ and didn’t want it known?

I can see some fun here in the village with this.

Asking the old ladies in the Church Flower Club if they are straight or lesbian in the reception area is going to be a riot.

I need to be there when they ask one elderly spinster, she is a right battleaxe.

Years ago I was told never answer this question...insurance companies would load policies for certain sections of society.

Ok, it was many years ago when AIDS was in the press 24/7.

I was told that those going for STD checks should always give a false name as by having the test you were admitting that you were promiscuous.

Some people had life insurance premiums increased and some refused.
