Re: Casual racism

I don't think I would be offended if I were Scottish and someone called me a Jock, I'd probably just take it with a pinch of salt but then we are all different. I would take offence if I was a black man and someone called me a N***R it just sounds so horrible.

Does racism still exist in our country? Isn't it becoming rarer?
Being called a Jock is about nationality, not race.

None of those would be meant to be offensive in my opinion. It just describes what area a person comes from.

I don't mind being called European, or British, or Scottish but I am not a Jock.

Re: Casual racism

I've been called all sorts of names but I don't take offence unless they are seriously insulting. Coming from Hull, the most common one is "Cod head", which is quite okay actually

I'd argue it's about both.

Re: Casual racism

Being Welsh wherever I travel people call me Taffy, it doesn't bother in the least, but I'd rather if they called me a pint.

You've obviously led a very sheltered life matey. I used to be a shop steward and Branch Secretary of my Trade Union at the places I worked, and have been called many names, some of which are not repeatable here, and are a physical impossibility.

Re: Casual racism

I was called Taffy here on this forum, in fact I was asked if I found that offensive. I fell about laughing as I'm English but I'm married to a Taff. I don't let things like that bother me. I agree with others, it's about nationality not race. Those who say it are just trying to wind you up so don't let them.

Ffosse, I know who called you a Jock, he called me a bonehead some time ago, now that is offensive. I didn't report him or start a thread about it though.
