Be careful with British Gas, most of the time they just use local sub-contractors rather than their own men so are virtually just acting as agent and bunging their profit on top...

Re: Boiler broken

reminds me of the old gag about a pilot ejecting from a stricken aircraft.

On the way down he met a chap on the way up, so he called out "Do you know how to open a parachute?"
The reply from the guy on the way up was " No but do you know how to mend boilers? "

Re: Boiler broken

Gas fitter called at a house and asked where the old Geaser was. The lady said he was working in the garden

Just note that if your house has micro bore pipes for the central heating you can't have a combi boiler. We found that out when we had a new boiler fitted, seems the pressure generated it too much for the pipes to take. New boiler fitted average about £1500 depending on make and size. You wuld have to have a gas fitter to give a more accurate quote

Re: Boiler broken

Thanks RP, we are replacing our old combi, with new, so I am assuming the pipe work should be up to par. We had a British Gas engineer service the old boiler yesterday ..(no don't go there) and he stated that it would be a straight replacement.

Old crap system fitted in the late 60s.

Very few firms did that sort of system even then

Fitted a few in my time for a firm I worked for in Sidcup.

Modern combi's are fine with microbore!
Pressure should be under 2 bar in the pipes which would not be an issue.

Spot on did not state that with my first reply.

Combi/Condensing boiler will work with a micro bore system.

Any one who goes to British Gas for a boiler quote will pay well over the odds.

I retired 10 years ago and charged up to £1100 for fitting a Combi boiler to an old open aired system, If a straight swop over £700

Yep,

I think BG are a rip as well.

People need to remember that the reliability of a boiler is only as good as the install as well. Some "cheaper" boilers such as Biasi or Ideal have an unfair rep. Biasi are actually very good "if" installed correctly and system flushed etc. Ideal suffered from "mud sticks" due to some models which were actually an issue. However, those models are now discontinued, and the new boiler / warranties are pretty good.
