Northern Soul?

Ok, what is/was it?
I used to hear folk from the North talk about it around about the 80's and have a vague recollection of "The Average White Band" whoever they were.
I think it's about time I found out what they were talking about, please enlighten me!

originally stemmed from The Mods in the late 60s....it was basically black soul music, Motown or Tamla motown to be exact.

I seem to remember the friends I had from up North liking Lionel Ritchie, he wasn't from the North was he?

North Alabama...possibly.
