Re: first strawberry for the year

We've been away and I hadn't netted mine over yet, so my first ripe berries have been pecked to pieces by birds. Tomorrow I'm putting an electric fence up....

netting is the answer. Get some bamboo hoops from your garden centre with some netting, that is what we do. not over expensive either

Re: first strawberry for the year

I ate my first one yesterday.
I won't have many this year because they are all first year plants, taken from runners last year.
Some people say you shouldn't let them fruit at all first year to build the plant up, but I shall have just a couple here and there.
