Living in Space

Professor Stephen Hawking reckons humans will have to head into space to find a new home and survive in the next 200-500 years.

He says the threats now facing Earth are "too big and too numerous, and the only places to go are other worlds."

He was speaking at an event in Norway, and he said nuclear-powered light ships or "some new form of energy" could carry craft to Alpha Centauri, Earth's nearest star system.

He also thinks that "spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth."#

Personally, I do think man will kill this planet one day.

Do you agree with the Professor, and can you ever envisage life elsewhere?

Re: Living in Space

Has he any suggestions as to where?

Anybody can make a prediction like that without fear of being proven wrong.

Re: Living in Space

We'll probably kill ourselves off before we kill the planet.

Re: Living in Space

I would love to be one of the first living in space. What an adventure that would be. Unfortunately, I suppose all the cr@p we endure on Earth would also go with us then we would destroy the new planet too.

Re: Living in Space

Our extinction one day is only a disaster for us, not the World. But Nasa's Kepler telescope has found 10 Earth-like planets :

Re: Living in Space

I thinks some left Planet Earth a long time ago, mentally if not physically.

Re: Living in Space

End up more like the Elysium movie - one gigantic space station for the rich and famous.

Deja-Vu - I seem to remember giving this answer before
