I'm always sceptical of accusations of nastiness, often the accuser is embarking on a character assassination of the accused. Unfortunately some onlookers fall for it. Your only recourse is to try and defend yourself and risk the wrath of the "friends" of the accuser or walk away. I tend to do the latter which usually results in a second attempt at baiting..... make your own mind up about people and unless you have a very thick skin don't be tempted.. remember this quote“Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.”
