Shropshiregirl, when I met my little two-year-old malnourished, weak, neglected daughter in a Russian orphanage, the director told me that they had already trained her to sweep, mop, wash dishes and do work for us, her parents. She then shook her head and said that we would probably just spoil her, which was a shame since she was a girl...and damaged goods.

Knowing that the director couldn't speak a word of English, my husband turned to me and said our daughter would touch another mop over his dead body, and that she had no idea how badly indeed she was going to be spoiled For years, if she so much as looked at a broom or mop, he would take it from her and do the work himself.

Now, of course, she is older and a conscientious, contributing member of the family. Even so I don't think either she or her dad are going to let the eventual man in her life turn her into a Russian house maid .

Well a neighbour is selling his house to go live in the Philippines or Thailand to be with his young bride. They have a baby together but the home office won't allow her permanent residence because she doesn't satisfy financial requirements. He's been wrangling with them for years now. I think he is retired now, must be in his sixties maybe. She is maybe in her twenties. I think he married her because he found it difficult to meet a young, attractive girl here. Fo her he was a good catch with the promise of a comfortable life in Britain. I saw her recently, she didn't seem subservient. I'd say she's a bit of a feminist, certainly had him running round after her and seemed to be a bit snappy and assertive.

I also worked with a guy who had a mail order bride from Africa. He was intelligent and good at his job, but not attractive but lacking in social skills.

There are a lot of single men who just don't appeal to women here for whatever reason or they don't appeal to the more attractive women they seek. Going abroad is perhaps their only chance of a relationship with a young, attractive woman.

I'm not saying that's the only reason for such romances but for the two guys I've mentioned it appears to be the reason.

So perhaps the question is why don't women here want to settle down with such guys - good providers who just want to marry and have kids with them. Many guys just don't tick the "cool and sexy" box.

Translation He found it difficult to find a young attractive girl in her twenties who wants to marry a bloke old enough to be her father.
They are certainly not subservient or at least not after they have the ring on their finger.
Soon he will find himself supporting her extended family or as soon as she is a British resident she will run off with someone she finds more appealing .Seen it happen many times.
I have also seen what appears to be happy relationships made in this way but i wouldn't bet on it.

He certainly seems far more stressed than he was. But she won't be a British resident as the Home office refuse to allow it. That's why he is moving there. He's really unhappy about it but there you go.

I have also met people who have made a happy union in this way. But without the age gap and when the woman is able to stay here. It's a business deal rather than a romance.

It's funny how some men think they can have a young woman at any age, if a woman of 60 went after a man of 20 I predict it would be looked at very differently.
