Re: Panic attacks

I've had a lot of panic attacks, mainly when I wake in the middle of the night with palpitations. But I am able to slow down my heartbeat by focusing on the facts. The facts being that it's just a panic attack. It was some advice on a panic attack forum that helped. You need to recognise that it's not real and slow down breathing.

I am starting to see a pattern where some days I just feel more upset about everything. I think for me it's down to eating the wrong food maybe. (I have allergies & intolerances). But it's not like an emotional trigger, definitely chemical.

When I feel like this everything feels off. I will feel really antsy if I have too many people around or in an enclosed space like a train or lift or even in the kitchen at work. Noise becomes a real nuisance (I seem to hear every little sound). I've realised I don't block out the "white noise" when I feel this way. I felt like this yesterday. I was in a meeting and I started to feel I was having tunnel vision (ugh!). It may be down to sleep patterns too because I was really tired having woken at 4am and not fallen asleep again.

Yet today I felt really calm and great. It's amazing.

When I feel panicky I tell myself to calm down because it will be ok again. But when you feel that way why is it so hard to believe?!

Cosmos, that is great. How many years have you been free of them? I can see why he put you on beta blockers, as the heart really speeds up doesn't it? My heart races and scares me.

Thanks Miss, I will do that. Seems to me, someone told me about that recently. Good advice.

Well, I have never passed out myself, so I don't know anything about that part of it.

Wow Annie, did you ever tell it like it is. I feel all that, including the tunnel vision. I also get nausea. It is all so real when it is happening. Thanks Annie, for this very caring and friendly post....I needed to read that as it hit home...

That happens to me too Annie, I do the same and talk myself out of it. Its weird that it only happens in the middle of the night... very strange.

It's reassuring to see that others have shared these scary experiences. Thank you for posting the thread.

In my worst one a few years ago, I felt like the room was spinning and I was almost hallucinating or it felt as though everything looked distorted. But that only happened once and I was going through a really bad time then. It was pretty frightening at the time.

I used to have anaphylaxis and that is accompanied by similar distortions of reality and feelings of dread. To the point that you feel traumatised returning to the scene of it.

So I am pretty convinced that it's not caused by what we think but we think things that we wouldn't think otherwise because of a purely physical phenomenon. (if you know what I mean!)

Perhaps the way we breathe at night or lying down has an effect? I hardly ever have palps during the day. Maybe dehydration could be part of it? But then if you drink too much before sleep you end up getting up for other reasons!

Re: Panic attacks

You are so right Annie, sharing and knowing that others know what I am talking about, and they feel like I feel, it makes us know we are not alone with this.

I can't lay on my left side at night, or I wake up with a panic attack. It must have something to do with I can't breath as well when I sleep on my left. I have to lay on my right side and make sure I don't sink too far down in the pillows. I need lots of room to breath.

A couple of times when I woke up with a panic attack in the middle of the night, I was afraid to go back to bed. I thought I was going to die if I went back to bed, so I stayed up the rest of the night then I had to work all day.

I used to teach swimming lessons and a couple times, I had to get out of the water quickly as a panic attack hit and with the water all around me, I couldn't breath and I thought I would drown. Good thing I am a strong swimmer, or I don't know what would have happened.

Re: Panic attacks

Th important thing to remember about panic attacks is that physical sensational of discomfort are uncomfortable but not dangerous.
