"Our Fresh Fish" Is Anything But!"

It seems that the "Fresh Fish" that we buy from supermarket counters is likely to be up to nine or even ten days old and previously been frozen!! according to Iceland Stores, the frozen food specialists.

That sickens me. Not for the fact that it not "Fresh Fish", I am not naive enough to believe fresh fish bought here in Shropshire has been plucked from the sea the same day and plonked on the Sainsbury's counter. No, it is the fact that instead of being delivered in cases of Ice to keep it fresh as I always thought, it has actually been frozen and then defrosted!! Even worse, there is proof that the fresh fish has deterioration after 22 hours of buying it. Iceland tests show that the frozen fish when defrosted, has no deterioration due to the fact that it is immediately frozen within hours of leaving the sea, and kept that way until you buy it. The goodness is locked in.

Food Standards Agency guidelines say fish may be labelled as fresh if it is has been kept chilled on ice, (as we all imagine) but not stored deep frozen, Yet these are just guidelines.

Well, we learn something new every day don't we? I will certainly no longer be buying "fresh fish" that is nine or ten days old but showing a 3 day shelf life on it, to fool me into thinking that it is freshly chilled, AND paying far more than if I bought the same but frozen from Iceland, where it seems one is getting a better quality product anyway for far less cost!

What are your views on the above? I feel as though I have been cheated by the fishmonger and supermarket fresh fish counter. Wouldn't you?

I never buy "fresh fish" but always frozen. Having lived in the North East of Scotland we became used to buying real fresh fish, the morning after it was caught. Seeing it on the fishmonger's slab it had a lovely gloss to the skin, the eyes were bright and one just knew you were getting the best. I have never bought "fresh" since moving back to the Midlands.

My thoughts are I already knew this. It was years ago I heard about it, it's the same with meat, most is frozen that's why much of it says not to refreeze at home.

I was terribly ill one night after buying seafood from Sainsburys.
I've bought the cod from the fishmonger section and been ok.
Is this frozen lark the same at local fishmongers as well?

Yes sainsburys almost killed a friend of mine she's deadly allergic to shell fish but didn't realise they don't wash hands between handling fish and shell fish.

I presume so MC, Unless one of the fishmongers here in Shropshire make the long journey to the shores to buy it!!

Strangely enough, only 5 minutes ago I had a leaflet pushed through the letterbox from a company called Micky Finns advertising "FRESH FISH"
(What are the odds of that?)

It says:
FRESH QUALITY FISH

Fresh on the day from Fleetwood Docks. We travel over 100 miles daily from the docks to each market.

Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
Llangollen Oswestry Wem Wrexham Oswestry

Micky Finns
Our Reputation Is As Good As Our Fish.

Do I believe them? Is it BS? Who knows? I am such a cynic now over so-called fresh fish!!

Julie, I have to confess that I heard something similar about meat. I don't wish to say that al market place lorries that entice people to buy lots of different cuts of meat at knock-down prices get it from this source butl..... my nephew worked for a reputable container lorry firm and his very first driving job was to go to a certain (fully licensed and registered plant) to collect and deliver joints of meat that had already been delivered to this plant from supermarkets etc when it was almost or on it's sell-by date.

My nephew had to wait for the delivery and strolled inside the building. Hesaid that the stench from the building was indescribable! When he looked he could see a huge vat where all the joints of meat were thrown into a substance that bleached the meat so that when it came out again it looked as good as new with the correct fresh colour and look.
He has never bought from anywhere other than our local butcher since where he can see where the meat is sourced.

Re: "Our Fresh Fish" Is Anything But!"

Hi

There are some meat lorries I would never buy from.

We have one locally which has 5 Stars for Food Hygiene.

He buys the meat from the packing plants which the supermarkets have not called down from their Contracts.

It is vacuum packed in date stamped and numbered packs with an official seal, traceable back to the farm it came from and the date of slaughter.

A 3 kilo entire beef fillet costs £30, a third of the Supermarket price.

On the other hand, there are some very bad ones.

A company in Telford was fined for selling burgers that were more than 3 years old.

It does pay to do a bit of research.

Re: "Our Fresh Fish" Is Anything But!"

As with most things in this modern life, you can not and should not trust the large companies. They are all corrupt and all have the "authorities" in their back pockets.

Thus supermarkets, which are largely owned by foreign moguls are able to bully their way through labelling laws and food laws and rip us off at every juncture. The fish being no exception.

Do you like the lovely smell of "freshly baked bread" in your local supermarket?

Well it'snot in the least bit fresh. Just about all supermarkets use pre frozen dough or actual frozen bread which they then put through their store ovens to create that enticing aroma. It's all crap, full of additives, flour enhancers and chemicals.

How about that lovely "freshly squeezed" orange juice?
Well again, regardless of your supermarket, it isn't fresh at all.

In fact just about all supermarkets use orange juice that is approximately ONE YEAR old !! Yes you read that correct.
Have you never wondered why orange juice is available all year round when oranges themselves are a seasonal fruit?
It's the result of horrible processing.

Oranges are "freshly squeezed" into huge steel vats and the juice then sits there for about a year. The oxygen is pumped out to preserve the juice but over the course of the year it loses all of its colour and becomes a clear liquid, and it loses all of its flavour. Still, remember, it WAS freshly squeezed at one point !!!

In order to revive this useless liquid, supermarkets then have to add FLAVOUR PACKS to it to restore the orange colour and the flavour.

Those flavour packs are unique to each manufacturer but in essence they contain the essential oils from the orange pith and peel. Thus on the labels they can still say that it is 100% orange juice because everything in there is derived from the orange.

It's all a big con and the public have been mislead in regards to orange juice for many years.

You might like to confirm this by emailing your local supermarket and asking them direct "Do you put flavour packs into your orange juice?". I predict you'll not get an answer.

Overall, the food industry and supermarkets are routinely conning us. They use carefully created and ambiguous labelling laws which they themselves have had created via their lobbying pressure. It's high time we kicked the supermarkets into touch.

We have done ourselves a great disservice over the years by giving them our business. As a result we have stood by whilst those supermarkets quietly eradicate all of our great local trades. Our former great butchers, green grocers, bakeries, fishmongers and all the rest.

We need to get them back. Restore those industries, restore those jobs and get fantastic produce once again.

All imho.
