They are celebrating secessionists that wanted to break from the United States, many see them as traitors today.

Reasons for seeking the break up of America was mainly the right to keep slaves.
The resulting Civil war had a massive death toll, one of the biggest in American history.

Those people wanting the heroes of slavery's statues removed are the descendants of slaves, black Americans.
All decisions to remove statues is a local issue, agreed in towns by locals.

My solution is to move the statues to museums, alongside other slave paraphernalia such as leg irons, stocks, bills of sale etc.etc.

It doesn't rewrite history, it doesn't celebrate traitors, it puts the low points of American history into the correct place, museums, same as Auschwitz-Birkenau.
It's not just America it's the UK too .
There is a movement to remove the statue of Cecil Rhodes from Oxford University and Colton from Bristol .
Cecil Rhodes was not a good man in many ways yet he is remembered as a benefactor for Rhodes scholars rather by some stature that most people didn't know existed anyway .
Of course slavery is a terrible thing but I don't think that removing a statue today will do any good for anyone .
The past cannot be changed .

Yes. Funny how snowflakes only seem to appear in the UK and the US.

Or perhaps they also occur elsewhere, although I haven't heard of them.

They say that history is written by the victors, and to be fair we really won from our history.

I have a solution to the dilemma, rather than tear the statues down, just attach a brief historically correct inscription..................everybody is happy.

Re: When is right to remove a statue?

Many of those statues are 1 of a kind and considered a work of art, You cannot change the past, it happened get over it. True many in that era owned slaves but George Washington paid his, they were compensated.
Like a few here have stated, its the snivelers that are pushing this issue many are extreme left and only care about what they Feel Is Right, and Just,.. these are the same that are pushing for LGBT issues in Schools, here and there. Sad in a way they carry on like this when for Years it wasn't an issue now all of a sudden it's a Big Deal. Seems important issues take the back burner, when they focus on nonsense like this. Sure they have an Agenda, they want you to think as they do, or else.

America with these Lefties is going down a creek with out a paddle.

You have to do something about the Antifa nutters and the so called professers at places like Berekley

Also the nutters on the View and CNN

I rather like CNN purely for their stance on the Donald.

Exactly. A time wasting, money wasting exercise that will not change anything.

Re: When is right to remove a statue?

I think that statues should be put into the Cemetery in which the person is buried.

People not yet dead, such as Football players, & Managers, could place them where they think they might be buried. or move them after death.

We could even charge them for Statues so placed.
