My Cardiology appointment today

This Was my first consultation, following the 48 hour tape machine I wore in early May.

Diagnosis is an atrial flutter in an upper chamber so recommendations are:

Referral to another specialist.
A heart scan
Medication from GP
Referral to anti coagulant clinic from GP

Seems it's nothing much to worry about but 'but we need to get on top of these things'. Nice young bloke named Hamish.

Oh, I digress! I asked would this cause a problem for booking travel insurance and he said no, but I will contact one or two companies and ask.

BP 110/65.

Earliest GP appt not till early September so I left it, and will drop the hospital form into the surgery today, when I go to Morrisons. Then they can deal with it as and when.

Re: My Cardiology appointment today

Sounds like it could be Atrial Fibrillation, same as I have Jazzi, I think it's quite a common complaint. I take a beta blocker and aspirin daily and it seems to keep it under control. Hope they deal with it fairly quickly for you though!

Hi Val I have AF and aspirin is no longer recommended for stroke prevention in AF patients....
See updated NICE guidelines.
2. Adults with atrial fibrillation are not prescribed aspirin on its own for preventing stroke.

If the CHADVAS score determines an anti coagulation is required asprin is not adequate.

I take a Apixaban one on the NOACS (Novel oral anticoagulants) and a beta blocker Nebivolol ...

Hi Jazzi you have an excellent BP, that is a good start.

Referral to another specialist.
As you live in London you will get access to an Electrophysiologists, no such luck here.
You will probably have an echocardiogram too which is a kind of ultrasound and painless.

Thanks for that information Meg. I was told by the cardiologist that if it got any worse I would go on warfarin. I also take a daily statin to keep my cholesterol steady.

Hi Val the anti coagulation risk score is not determined by how bad your condition is, for example if you are a woman you score one point and another for being over 65.
It is worth keeping an eye on ...
http://www.chadsvasc.org/

Page 22..
• In England, almost a third (31%) of eligible patients do not receive anticoagulation.
• It is estimated that if AF was adequately treated, around 7,000 strokes would be prevented and 2,100 lives saved every year
(England only).
