Re: Smelly Memories

Another deeply evocative smell from my teenage years was the smell of raw power - of overheated Castrol "R" oil from the motorbikes we used to race on grass tracks at race meetings.

Re: Smelly Memories

The smell of barbeques (most neighbours with gardens seem to do them round here).

Re: Smelly Memories

I can't remember barbecues from my earlier days (when did they start?) ..... what I do remember is the aroma of the special treat of egg and bacon on a Sunday morning.

Barbeques have been around for the past 40 odd years Mag darlin' - I certainly remember attending several that my neighbours hosted back in the 70s.

Fields of Strawberries ripening in the sun in the days when there was always lots of straw around them and skylarks singing overhead.

There were still barbeques (after a fashion) even back then - did you have men selling roast chestnuts in the street over a coal-fired brazier??? - There used to be a fisherman who, having brought his boat up on the beach, used to cook some or all of his catch on a brazier on the beach.

My Grandad used to cook some of his food on a shovel stuck inside the fire box of a steam engine.
