Re: Roberts poems (part 1)

Here lies old Fred
He’s quite quite dead
It was often said
He was over fed

He married young Kat
Already quite fat
From eating tat
What a prat

They loved their food
With manners quite rude
They’d finish with booze
Then have a long snooze

I’m not sorry for them
They’d do it again
And not learn to dance
Choose not food but romance

Some hopes..

MONKEYS

Monkeys and apes are our nearest relatives
They don’t need drugs or any sedatives
They are rescued from harm by folks from the zoo
And in general are fed better than me or you

Do I envy these animals lot?
No fear oh no certainly not
A blinking nuisance is all that hair
There’s ne’er a place where the hairs not there

And another thing---they’re always scratching
Is it bugs or something that is catching
On balance if I were a monkey or zoo ape
I wouldn’t bother trying to escape

I really like that one Pats - for me, there is something very special about trees (no idea why I think that) so your poem strikes a bit of a chord!

Leisure

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, my - how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

TOO LATE

I don’t ever want to hear myself say
I should have seen them before
I only had to turn up at their door
We had such good times in the past
I didn’t know their health was so poor
I thought that forever they’d last
Our friendship it meant so much
But now those times are in the past
I should have noticed the clammy touch
I should have made an effort to see them
It wouldn’t have been an effort, not much
I’m now left downcast and beaten
But I look forward to that wonderful day
When in heaven again I’ll meet them

LEISURE

Thats spooky ben, Pats poem brought LEISURE to my mind too.
I learnt it by heart at school, along with CARGOES by John Masefield & THE GREEN EYE OF THE LITTLE YELLOW GOD
J. Milton Hayes.
