working tax credit repayment on retirement

My friend V retired in march this year . She worked for minimum wage in a shop and paid into their pension . She received £6000 after being taxed but contacted hmrc and then got her tax back £1200 . Whilst working she
was claiming working tax credit of around £80 per month , her total income being around £600 a month .

This week she got a letter from hmrc to say she had been overpaid £654 and must repay it , she came here and together we contacted them , sure enough they want their money back because her income on retirement was more due to her pension payout her tax refund and a slightly higher wage in the last month due to working a month in hand 20 yrs ago !

V has had to set up a direct debit to repay hmrc of £20 per month till its cleared .

Sharp enough to take it back, but slow as hell to repay what they owe you. Think i would have went to CAB they may have made them accept less per month.

I agree with Nom always go to cab they can negotiate down to a figure that she won't miss, ours was £1 a month on each of our debts when my husband had a stroke. My calls had only got it down to £40 a month each debt. Cab are fabulous at this sort of thing.
