Falcon Heavy

Anyone else see the launch of Elon Musk's Falcon Heavy space rocket? It's the world's most powerful rocket and is designed to carry heavy payloads into space or make the long trips to the Moon or Mars. On this occasion, the payload was one of Musk's old sport-cars complete with a dummy in a space suit.

The lift-off was faultless and a thing to behold. Another great design feature is the booster rockets which are designed to return to Earth and land in chosen using booster rockets for a soft landing. Two of the boosters landed as planned but one which was supposed to land on a floating platform missed its target.

A great achievement.

Re: Falcon Heavy

Indeed .....

Starman heads to Mars in a cherry-red Tesla sports car, listening to David Bowie on the radio.

Elon Musk, The SpaceX CEO, said the challenges of developing the new rocket meant the chances of a successful first outing might be only 50-50.

"I had this image of just a giant explosion on the pad, a wheel bouncing down the road. But fortunately that's not what happened," he told reporters after the event.

Hmmm - what happens when its orbit detiorates and it crashes back to earth??? who's going to clear up the mess or deal appropriately (with suitable compensation) with anyone injured or killed by this irresponsible publicity stunt???

Re: Falcon Heavy

A quote from Elon Musk

"The roadster will get about 400 million km away from Earth, and it'll be doing 11km/s," he told reporters in a briefing on Monday. "We estimate it will be in that orbit for several hundred million years, maybe in excess of a billion years."

Even if doesn't remain in orbit that long, it will burn up on re-entry.

Hi

With a bit of luck it could crash on Brighton when the Labour Party are holding a Conference.

Re: Falcon Heavy

A phenomenal achievement. I watched it live and felt as excited as when watching the Apollo launches.
