Oh, no doubt. There are definitely no rules, as far as I'm concerned. You can make them however you want to.

I've had these "Pigs in a Blanket" before and they're delicious for breakfast. They're in a blueberry pancake batter.

They're easy to make. Just get the sausages on your choice and make a blueberry pancake batter, leaving it nice and thick. Then dip your sausages into the batter, then into frying oil.
