I have cork tiles in my bathroom which have been down for many years but, once they were laid, they were varnished, and they definitely don't break up, and are very easy to clean.

Have you thought of laminated flooring? Or even ceramic tiling, although that would be pretty exoensive and perhaps a bit *cold*
