Funnily enough I just bought some Bonjela a couple of weeks ago and it worked fine for me and quite pleasant to taste so its been interesting reading the thread.

Completely gone now. I'll remember in the future to gargle with bicarbonate of soda and water plus use the Benzydamine liquid.

I'm someone who never gets mouth ulcers but it was a side effect of the chemotherapy...my mouth was so sore that even a banana hurt to eat.

I’ve not had mouth ulcers caused by the chemo but I chipped a tooth and that made my tongue sore. It seems to have smoothed out a bit now thankfully.

Re: What's the best thing for mouth ulcers?

I think it was the first time a Registrar actually sat down with me and went through the list of possible side effects of methotrexate. Some of them are quite serious including kidney damage and encephalopathy if your blood and urine aren't alkaline enough - hence the taking of all the bicarbonate of soda (luckily they were able to infuse me with that). I have to go through it all again on June 21st but at least this time I'll know what to expect.

Was quite frightening, really, and I had the option of not going through with it but she explained that serious side-effects are rare. Strange, though, I can't even remember signing anything each time they operated on my neck or before chemo in general. Maybe I did.

Have you had to sign any disclaimers, Val J?

Re: What's the best thing for mouth ulcers?

Before I had any of my chemo, I was given a load of paperwork explaining all the side effects, some more serious than others. I was also told that we need to have some side effects to show that the treatment is working!

I remember signing something before I had my Hickman Line put in but as for my chemo, I really can’t remember, but I expect I did.

Nothing is working for my son.
I will see if these mouth ulcers are connected to his ongoing illness. I will be taking him to the specialist on Wed. Terrible pains in his abdomen for 2 months now.

Sweetie, this isn't normal for a young lad, tell the specialist that you will not leave until they investigate further!

I will try Twink, but you know what they are like, I sometimes feel that NHS patients are on a conveyor belt.

If he can't offer anything to ease the symptoms, tell him you thought he was a doctor but it seems you are mistaken.
The ulcers and the stomach pain may be connected, so there must be some test they can do to establish if that is the case.
I know much of the NHS is under pressure, but some of the time wasted is often caused by them not diagnosing complaints soon enough..... and that results on more NHS expenditure if the patient gets worse!
