We are leaving that - we don't want to be in the single market (except Switzerland who have bilateral agreements instead if single market access which brings us back to the original post).
Do you mean the EEA? EFTA is Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein. We toyed with EFTA but EFTA did not want us.

Ok let's brush EFTA vs EEA under the carpet.

Putting aside Singapore which has a population of next to nothing, how long did EU agreements with Canada and Japan take to negotiate?

They aren't ratified or completed yet.

This may come as a surprise Annie but here is a question for you ...

"How many ratified FTAs has the EU completed with 3rd countries outside the single market ?"

Go and have a look ... the key words are "ratified" and "completed".

Well that doesn't give us much hope for agreeing any trade deal! Which was kind of my point. Is 2050 an optimistic estimate?

Ofcourse we can agree a trade deal with the EU - they just need to grow up and stop behaving like children.

My point was that these FTA's the the EU have are with countries that already part of the EU or low population EFTA/EEA countries who are part of the single market - the other FTA's such as Japan, Canada etc haven't been completed or are not ratified yet, its a big con. You must be surprised at this ?

In the meantime we can make trade deals with other countries around the world. An FTA with the EU is not the "be all" and "end all" because there are other ways to get around tarrifs (for example exchange rate fluctuations).

If the EU do not want to give the UK an FTA (they offered us one but only for Great Britain) then thats up to them - we can't make them do it, but we can buy our stuff from elsewhere which would be catastrophic for them. Businesses in the EU would not be happy - we would be their biggest single market when we leave.
