Simi
Horrible day yesterday. We had to say goodbye to our beautiful big bear, Simi, our 6 year old Leonberger. She was diagnosed in February with a really aggressive form of bone cancer and was only expected to live for less than a month. For five months she fought the disease and, despite the tennis ball size lump on her ankle, showed no signs of discomfort or pain. Then last week, the tumour started growing at an alarming pace. In just a few days it had quadrupled in size and deformed her leg to the extent that she was completely lame. As it was only a matter of time before it spread to her other organs we had to make the decision that we always dread with our pets.
She was the perfect family dog - a gentle giant - loving, loyal, always cheerful. It was almost like she was a human part of the family and she was loved by everyone who ever met her. This was reflected in her passing. Not only was the whole family present at the vets yesterday, but also a group of tough young men (friends of my son) who took time off work specially, and who were not ashamed to let the tears flow for the friend they had lost.
Simi was also a "working dog" - she helped out on all our fundraisers for our Husky Welfare charity, and she was one of our most effective canine "therapists" in our work with The Starlight Foundation and the terminally ill children they look after. She will leave a huge space in our lives........
Sleep well beautiful girl!
