Lucky Puppies

My wife Terry and I founded and help to run a national Siberian Husky Welfare Association. We take in unwanted Siberians and find them new, loving, permanent homes. In just under four years, we have taken in and rehomed over 450 unwanted Siberians. Most of these were adolescent or adult dogs. Very occasionally we get puppies in, and at the end of October, to our surprise, we took in two pregnant bitches just days from whelping. One litter was looked after by our East Anglian co-ordinator, while the other bitch came to our home (where we already have three other fosters apart from our own dogs). This poor bitch, Mia, was extremely ill with pneumonia and we (and our vets) were concerned that she would survive, let alone whelp healthy pups. She was a fighter though and two weeks ago tomorrow, she gave birth to 6 puppies. After some scary moments with chest infections, all 6 puppies (and mum) are now healthy and strong. These pictures of the litter were taken yesterday and this morning:

Re: Lucky Puppies

Oh well done Mia, you too MickB and Terry, what a happy ending. Mia and her puppies are just gorgeous. Is this the first set of puppies you've had born at your place? Happy and busy times are ahead!

Doesn't it make you spit what some people are capable of?

I'm also involved with a couple of dog rescues and see similar incredibly cruel things happening.

Well done you and your wife and bless you both for giving these dogs a chance of a happy life. It doesn't bear thinking of what would become of so many dogs if it wasn't for people like you who 'do' rather than 'talk'.

Mia, the bitch we have, was mated by her original owner, who then realised that whelping pups was going to be hard work. He then sold both the dog and the pregnant bitch for £50 the pair on his local freeads. The purchaser soon realised that they were totally unprepared for husky ownership let alone raising a litter of pups. They also realised that the bitch was very unwell. Luckily at this stage, they decided to seek advice from our organisation and eventually agreed to pass the dogs on to us. The dog has now been neutered and adopted by a lovely family and the bitch will stay with us until she has fully recovered from the pups and has been speyed. We also have the job of finding suitable homes for the pups.
The bitch being looked after by our colleague has a less certain history - she was dumped at a Motorway Services and that is all we know.
