Virgil (Gus) Grissom was one of three astronauts who perished in Apollo 1 when it blew up on the launch pad.


Viktor Patsayev was one of the two Russian cosmonauts, who after the completing the longest stay in an orbiting space station (at that time), died on the return to earth when their Soyuz return capsule's seals failed and they suffocated.


Judith Resnik was one of the astronauts on the space shuttle Challenger that blew up a few seconds after take-off just as the booster rockets fired.


Laurel Clark was aboard the ill-fated space shuttle Columbia that disintegrated upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.
