Nematodes

Has anyone any experience of using these, and if so, for which problem?
Do you find them efficient?

Why do you use them, is it because you prefer 'natural' to chemicals?

I worry about chemicals around my dogs. So am thinking of buying some nematodes for vine weeval.

Any experience of using these would be appreciated - thanks.

Re: Nematodes

Let us know if you try them Mups!
I'm worried they might kill friendly bugs or morph into blood sucking leeches or turn out to be aliens in disguise and grow and grow and take over the World!

Mups, get ducks, they love bugs and slugs

Our two spend the day hoovering through the lawn and beds they can reach, gobbling them up and then we get lovely tasty eggs in return

Re: Nematodes

My neighbour used Nematodes on her lawn when crane fly larvae started to demolish her grass , there were thousands of them . She had the two whippets at the time so couldn't use any pesticide. It worked.

I was amazed living next door that my lawn was not attacked but then there is moss and weeds in mine so perhaps the larvae don't like that so much.

Mups nematodes are discussed a lot on Gardeners Question time and they seem to be popular but expensive.
There are different ones depending on the pest.

Yes, I am thinking about the one for vine weevals Meg.
I believe they have to be kept refregerated then used within 2 weeks of purchase. The weather has to be over 5 degs. too, else they die.

I am thinking about it for the same reason your neighbour did, because of the dogs. 2 of them are often rooting about in the compost. The oldest one eats it, and young Gertie looks for any bits of wood to collect. So the chemical drench I used to use would not be safe.

Interesting what you said about your neighbours lawn, thanks.

Yes, I used to keep a lot of ducks Missy, (love the little Call Ducks), but in this case they wouldn't be able to help, as these bugs are down in the roots of shrubs planted in tall tubs.
Thanks for the input though.

Re: Nematodes

I didn't realise nematodes could be used in the garden, I thought they only worked in the greenhouse.
