I can see your point Nom, and looking at it logically I agree (sort of) and I too, must have double standards as I'm a meat eater too.
I suppose the difference is we have a lot of close contact with our 'pets' and get to know them inside out - no pun intended. We know their likes and dislikes and their personalities, so killing them would be similar 'emotion-wise' to killing anyone else in the family.
With animals we have never met, and no nothing about, the personal relationship is not there, and I suppose therefore, the same emotions do not occur.
In a way, perhaps it's a bit like reading in the paper that a stranger has been murdered. Of course it is always tragic, but
emotionally I doubt it would knock you for six in the same as it would if it had been a family member. Does that make sense?
