Given that prisons are finishing schools for criminals do we really want to send first offenders to gaol? (I'm assuming that this person was)To expose them to hardened criminals, the drugs, the bullying, the rape doesn't seem to offer anything in the way of rehabilitation.
In my opinion, as a rule of thumb, first offenders should never go to gaol, there are plenty of other options. I realise there are exceptions to this but this is speaking very generally. Prisons are expensive places to run without using them to train more inmates with better criminal skills.

It could only happen in the Northern Territory:At least four prisoners in Darwin are suspected of repeatedly escaping the prison, getting drunk, then voluntarily returning to the facility in the hope no one would notice.
The ABC understands authorities were checking whether low-security prisoners have repeatedly escaped from a work release centre at Berrimah jail for a few hours after a 7pm headcount.
I read elsewhere that the NT authorities are concerned that there may not be crime to fit this offence.
