I think we need to consider the effect this would have upon the child and how long it takes, if ever, she forgets this incident. It must have been terrifying for her and her mother.

We do but we also have to see she saw her mother triumph and that may count more towards how it affects her in the future.

Might have been even better for the child if the Mother had done what I suggested, and since she'd already been threatened with the gun, she has the perfect defence of 'self-defence' had she shot him.

I am not sure about that children can be traumatised by violence and bloody scenes whether they are triumphant or not.

Credit to the woman for having a go - but it could have so easily gone the other way with disastrous results.

The poor child is having nightmares now - how much worse would they be if she had seen someone wounded/killed?

The young lad sounds like an inept 'chancer' who came unstuck. Maybe the fact that he had to appear in court at all will be enough make him think twice before doing it again. In gaol he may have learned to be more violent. Who knows - as Julie rightly says - we do not have the facts. We were not there.

Unfortunately the elephant in this particular room is the fact that our prisons are already overcrowded and the judiciary are expected to find non-custodial alternatives wherever possible.

They seem to find room for TV licence dodgers, you know those really dangerous people who can't actually afford a TV licence.

Julie, T.V. Licence dodging is no longer a criminal offence, but a civil one.
