Anyone had a prostate biopsy ?

Husband's latest health problem, he is due to have a prostate biopsy soon, he asked hospital if he needs time off work and got a woolie well possibly. He does a manual job some heavy lifting so needs to book time off if it's necessary, so wondered if anyone has had it and would they think a couple of days off a good idea ?

Re: Anyone had a prostate biopsy ?

I don't know, Julie, but when I first saw my GP to check whether I had an enlarged prostate I asked what the options were for treating it. He put me on pills, of course, but if the pills failed to work the next option could be a TURP (trans-ureteric resection of the prostate). I won't go into details, but he did mention that it would certainly be 'bloody'!
As for a biopsy I'm not sure, but I should imagine they would go in via the same route and just take a few 'scrapings'. I have a feeling that it would be less invasive and less debilitating than a TURP.
Have a look online. The internet can be very informative. You should be able to get a definitive answer from the hospital. Persist.

If you have a contact for a Specialist Urology Nurse. Give her a ring. If you can't see a number ring the Consultants Secretary and ask her a contact number.

It's always best to contact the team looking after your health rather than on a general forum of unqualified members of the public.

My problem is they only speak to my husband as I said he is useless at asking. So I was just seeing if anyone had any experience of it could give me a clue.

Typical bureaucrats, although to be fair in this country, where everyone goes down the legal route, they have to be careful.

Why not get your husband to ask whilst you listen in and prompt him to ask the right questions? I think it is a perfectly reasonable question to ask for advice as to whether to take time off work.

Yes I understand why they do it, just drives me mad when they know how bad he is at asking. I'll write it down for him, see if that helps.

Julie if you speak to the Urology Specialist Nurse or the Secretary and explain the situation they will be more than happy to assist. Don't be put off. It's never a problem to the staff. Or even ask the Secretary if you can speak to the consultant himself.

Julie if I can give advice. Never give out private medical information over the internet. Somebody could work out who you are, even neighbours . Drop me a private email if you need advice not the forum one Goldi x
